Global Health Programme
The Global Health Programme (GHP) is the Graduate Institute’s research programme on Global Health Governance and Diplomacy.
The Global Health Programme at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies was established in spring 2008 as one of the first of its kind in an institute devoted to international relations and development. It reflects the wider trend in both the practice and the analysis of global health which pays increasing attention to the links between health, foreign policy, trade and development. It builds capacity by engaging in research, knowledge translation and diffusion, as well as by conducting executive trainings in global health diplomacy for and with major stakeholders, particularly those present in Geneva.
The Global Health Programme aims at being a leading research centre on health as a global governance challenge and a centre of excellence in global health diplomacy worldwide. The GHP draws upon the political support of global policy leaders and reflects on the policy perspectives opened by the Oslo Declaration 2007 on Global Health and Foreign Policy and its subsequent UN Resolutions. It sets agendas in global health governance and diplomacy, both at European and international level. The programme has also developed partnerships across the regions with a wide-range of actors and its strength to work inter-disciplinarily is an important feature of the programme.
Its activities focus on two pillars, namely global health governance and global health diplomacy, which inform each other: The academic analysis of challenges and shifts in global health governance and global governance for health contribute to the capacity building of decision-makers and representative from governments, international organisations, global health initiatives and other stakeholders in global governance for health, such as civil society, foundations, private sector, platforms and alliances. The monitoring of key international heath negotiations will define, among others, the research agenda of the GHP.
