Students of the Master in International Affairs and the Master in Development Studies must complete 4 of the following workshops.
Behavioural Public Policy
This workshop introduces students in to the main insights of behavioral economics and how these insights can improve the effectiveness of traditional tools that are based on financial incentives and regulation. In recent years, behaviorally informed policy tools were successfully applied to a wide variety of policy domains including savings behavior, education, labor markets, health care, energy use, and tax compliance. The aim of the workshop is to inform students of the many cognitive, social, and motivational drivers that guide everyday behavior and encourage them to apply these general insights into specific policy-relevant settings. The workshop combines lectures, experiments, case studies, group assignments, and student presentations.
Big Data Analysis
This workshop provides a basic introduction to big data and corresponding quantitative research methods. The objective is to familiarize students with big data analysis as a tool for addressing substantive research questions. The workshop begins with a basic introduction to big data and discusses what the analysis of these data entails, as well as associated technical, conceptual and ethical challenges. Strength and limitations of big data research are discussed in depth using real-world examples. Students then engage in case study exercises in which in small groups they develop and present a big data concept for a specific real-world case. This includes practical exercises to familiarize students with the format of big data. It also provides a first hands-on experience in handling and analyzing large, complex data structures. The workshop is designed as primer for anyone interested in attaining a basic understanding of what big data analysis entails.
This workshop provides students with a methodological approach to how to deal with reputation management of firms and organizations in situations of crisis. It goes through a five-step process for handling crisis communications, showing students how to deal with and respond to media, build effective messaging strategies, and identify relevant response strategies. A large part of the workshop is dedicated to actual situations where the students work through a scenario, are interviewed on camera and receive critiques for the handling of events.
Evaluation of Development Projects
This workshop introduces students to the skills of evaluating development project. More specifically, the workshop provides a practical step-by-step guide and presents the main tools and methodologies required to design and conduct an internal and/or external evaluation based on techniques. While the focus of the workshop is on qualitative approaches, key elements of quantitative evaluations are also presented and discussed.
Gestion de Projets
Cet atelier est une initiation à la gestion stratégique de projets de développement, combinant la dimension théorique/conceptuelle et l’application pratique. La gestion du cycle de projet servira de référence conceptuelle et nous approfondirons la phase d’identification, l’élaboration de document de projet, du cadre logique, ainsi que les questions de suivi et d’évaluation. Le cours est donné en français, mais chaque étudiant peut s’exprimer en français ou en anglais.
This 2 full-day challenge-driven learning-by-doing workshop immerses students into various negotiation environments relevant to cooperation and development issues. The workshop is highly practical, hands-on and participatory, and blends short interactive presentations with realistic negotiation and simulation exercises, followed by analytical debriefings with personalized video feedback. Upon completion, students are equipped to implement a 10:20:70 negotiation learning and development strategy: one learns how to keep learning from future meeting/negotiation experiences. Students assume different roles in negotiation role-play simulations on a frequently alternating basis: they can directly test themselves, apply theoretical concepts and through immediate expert feedback improve personal negotiation skills.
Personal Presence & Storytelling
In this workshop students become aware, experiment and develop their personal presence which is crucial for engaging public appearances. Through a series of practical exercises, feedback and coaching, which takes places in a theatre outside of the Institute, the workshop familiarize students with the inherent power of their body language, voice and emotions, bringing out their unique personality and self-confidence in order to develop a connection to the audience. Among other things, the workshop introduces the concept of business storytelling and helps the students cope with the challenging Q&A.
The workshop gives students the opportunity to apply project management techniques through class exercises using a particular case study throughout, taking into consideration the vastly different local contexts that make international development projects as contested locally as they are nationally and globally. The workshop focuses on practical, intuitive, and analytical thinking whereby students are the examiners and creators of project management tools and strategies, not just the users of them. The workshop consists of an initial group desk assignment, a two-day training workshop and a half-day presentation session at the Palais de Nations (UN). The workshop aims to provide students with the ability to identify, use and think critically about the most up-do-date methods for effective project design within a development context.
The objective of this workshop is to introduce students to strategic foresight, a policy planning discipline related to Future Studies, the study of the future. Strategic foresight aims are envisaging alternative views of the future. These alternatives can be used by organizations and States to develop policy strategies with a view to build their resilience, aim for the preferred future or to avoid a negative one. Students are exposed to and practice a series of foresight tools to help them develop a “future-ready” mind. They also practice the technique of scenario building. The topic to be explored in this workshop using strategic foresight is “the Future of the Nation State”.
