Teaching Skills Workshop
This workshop provides initial training and practical skills for use in teaching practice. This one-day interactive workshop gives an opportunity for those with no or very limited teaching experience to explore some of the main ideas and issues relating to learning and teaching in Higher Education in a supportive environment. It aims to provide participants with the necessary practical skills and knowledge to enable them to begin teaching and supporting learning with confidence and enthusiasm.
Outline of the Workshop:
Participants are expected to actively engage in activities and discussions on a number of topics, including:
- your role in teaching students and your teaching style
- developing and understanding of student learning and the diversity of student needs
- approaches to lecturing
- incorporating active learning techniques
- teaching small groups, and using questioning and discussion
- using e-learning technologies to enhance teaching
A teaching assistant position at the Institute requires a commitment to attend these sessions.
Dr. Mònica Feixas is Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Pedagogy at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She holds a Licenciature in Pedagogy, a Master’s degree (M.Ed) in Educational Administration (Teachers College, Columbia University), and a Doctorate (PhD) in Education (UAB). She has taught graduate and postgraduate courses in educational management and didactics in higher education for more than 18 years as part of teachers’ initial and continuous training. Dr Feixas is a foundational member of the EDO research group (Equipo de Desarrollo Organizacional- Organisational Development Team: http://edo.uab.cat). In 2014 she moved to Switzerland with her family. She was Research Fellow at the Institut für Wirtschaftspädagogik, Universität St. Gallen and, at present, she works part-time for the Center of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at the Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich. She collaborates regularly with academic development units of universities in Spain, Latin-America as well as Switzerland in research projects and pedagogical consultancy. Her main research interests include teaching and learning cultures in higher education, pedagogical training of university teachers and transfer of training.
