Natural resources: deterring corruption and improving commodities trading transparency
Dr. Daniel KaufmannPresident and CEO of NRGI
Venue: Auditorium A1B, Maison de la paix, Chemin Eugène-Rigot 2
In 2017 the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) released an index to raise global awareness of the governance deficit in the natural resources sector. Daniel Kaufmann, President and CEO of NRGI will present the findings of the Resource Governance Index (RGI) and elaborate on key issues that are currently debated at the global and national levels, including Switzerland, with regard to the governance of - and trade in - oil, gas, minerals and metals.
Payments related to commodity trading where companies purchase oil, gas and minerals from government entities are economically significant but remain largely secretive and vulnerable to abuse. What can be done to improve transparency and deter corruption in commodity trading? What is the role of companies, home countries and producer governments in ensuring better development outcomes for poor countries?
Dr. Kaufmann is a leading expert in the field of governance and anti-corruption. He is currently a member of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) international board and serves on various international advisory boards, including the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Group on Anticorruption and Integrity and the Inter-American Development Bank’s President High-Level Advisory Group on Transparency. He has also held several high-level positions at the World Bank and he remains responsible of producing each year the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) assessing governance nationally in every country (and an input to the RGI). Dr. Kaufmann, a Chilean, received an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics at Harvard, and a B.A. in economics and statistics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
