The Financial Crisis and G20

EVENT:

Monday, 2nd March 2009 - Tuesday, 3rd March 2009

Conference on the Financial Crisis and G20 Summitry: Decoding (South) African Positions
- A Workshop hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs

As the global financial crisis unfolds, high level attempts to contain its impact intensified, with the G20 summit attracting most attention. The agenda of these summits is often very broad and opaque to those not directly involved in international financial markets as either participants or regulators. With the exception of South Africa, the entire African continent is not represented at the summit. However, the financial crisis has far-reaching consequences for most African nations via various channels. The most prominent include reduced demand and prices for African exports, a reduction in trade finance, protectionist measures, reduced inflow of remittances and for some a reduction in capital inflows.

The workshop in Johannesburg centered on sustained access to international capital and the consequences for trade of African countries. Professor Richard Baldwin of the Graduate Institute, held within this context a presentation on the crisis’ impact on trade and what African nations could do to limit adverse consequences in the months ahead.
