Workshop background

This project looks at the evolution of bilateral relations between Switzerland and the European Union. Particularly, it looks at factors that facilitate or hinder the inclusion of a topic in bilateral negotiations. Through examining agenda-setting, the project aims at exploring not only the continuation and extension of the bilateral agreements but also aims at exploring alternatives. In doing so, particular attention is paid to the feasibility and consequences of establishing a framework agreement. This perspective is enhanced by comparing the Swiss-EU relation with other cases of bilateralism in a conference that will take place at the Graduate Institute in the first week of October 2010.

Topics include:

  Mapping economic bilateralism;
  Legalism in PTA Dispute Settlement Mechanisms;
  Managing Multiple-track bilateralism;
  Impact of firms on EU bilateralism;
  Swiss-EU bilateral negotiations and relations;
  Institutional Aspects of the EEA Agreement.
