The course provides an overview of feminist interventions in the field of International Relations, with a particular emphasis on security studies. It addresses three broad topics. First, it reviews feminist critiques of key international relations concepts, such as anarchy and the state as well as explores relevant reformulations. Second, it probes various forms of violence – from war to rape – and reviews theories seeking to understand the relationship between security and masculinity. It finally surveys feminist interventions into security practices. These include the interventions of movements as well as international organisations and encompass topics such feminist peace activism, mainstreaming gender into security sector reform, and the treatment of gender-based wartime violence in international courts.
