Gender and Economic Development

This course considers a number of topics associated with the links between gender’s empowerment and economic development. The focus will be on both sides of the relationship, on how development can reduce gender inequality and on how empowerment can accelerate development. Topics include the role of gender in shaping the political, economic and social opportunities; gender gaps in education, economic participation, health and political opportunity; international and national migration; conflict, HIV and AIDS; urbanization; leadership; property rights; global processes as well as the evaluation of specific interventions, all within the broader context of development economics. The course is application-oriented: after reviewing basic theories associated with each topic, each lecture will involve analysis and discussion of recent empirical studies. By the end of the course, it is hoped that participants will be able to critically assess policy documents on the topics covered that are commonly produced by international institutions
