Profil

Vera Gowlland Debbas is Honorary Professor of International Law and a Visiting Professor at University College London.  She was a member of the Institute Faculty from 1994-2009. She has also  been a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford;  the Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales, Université Paris II; and the University of California, Berkeley. The special courses she has given have included the Hague Academy of International Law, the European University Institute in Florence, and the Institut des droits de l’homme in Strasbourg. Her teaching, expertise and publications cover such topics as United Nations law, Security Council sanctions, international responsibility, treaty law, the International Court of Justice, refugee law and human rights. In 1991, she was awarded the ASIL Certificate of Merit for her book Collective Responses for Illegal Acts in International Law. Professional activities have included acting as Counsel for the Arab League in the 2004 ICJ Advisory Opinion on the Legal Consequences of the Construction of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and advising governments, private law firms and international organisations.
