Exchange Programmes

 

The Institute is keen to encourage academic exchanges with other institutions and to increase its international presence. To this end, it has established an important network of partnerships and exchange programmes [pdf] with some of the most prestigious universities.

With a partner university

Agreements with the following universities mean that our students are able to spend a semester studying outside the Graduate Institute in one of the partner institutions. Exchange students are selected on the basis of academic merit.

During the third semester of their course, Master’s students are able to obtain up to 30 ECTS credits or equivalent.

Many of our partner institutions also accept PhD students for one or two semesters. This provides advanced PhD students (those whose preliminary theses have already been completed and approved) with the opportunity to conduct local research relevant to their theses. In addition, the International Law department of the Graduate Institute has also signed agreements with the following establishments:

These four agreements are only open to Master’s and PhD students of the International Law department.

Deadline for applications: 1 March

With Oxford University, under the EUROPAEUM framework

The Europaeum makes available to an advanced PhD student from the Institute a study grant of a value of £500. This grant is intended to enable the student to spend three weeks at Oxford University, take advantage of the libraries and specialist archives, and meet with researchers and professors from the university. As part of its services, the Europaeum can also assist the laureate with accommodation.

In the United States under the GALLATIN agreement

The Gallatin scholarship [pdf], awarded each year, enables a PhD student to study for 10 months in an American university of their own choice.

Deadline for applications: 15 February

SYLFF PLUS: SYLFF RESEARCH ABROAD

In its capacity as a member of the SYLFF consortium, managed by the Tokyo Foundation, the Institute offers PhD students in receipt of a Tokyo Foundation grant the opportunity to undertake research in one of the SYFLL network member institutions. Grants are worth a maximum of US$ 7,000. The period abroad must last for a minimum of 15 days and a maximum of three months.

RESEARCH ABROAD

The SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation) offers research grants to young researchers (PhD students whose preliminary theses have been accepted) to enable them to spend between six and 24 months in one or several research institution(s) abroad. These subsidies are intended to cover personal costs, fund part of the travel costs and contribute towards research and conference costs.

Deadlines for application to the local commission of the SNSF at the University of Geneva: 1 February and 1 August
