Work Permit

To work and live in Switzerland, foreign citizens must request a work permit. Different categories exist according to the profession and the country of residency.

Professors hired by the Institute, as well as their spouse and accompanying children, are granted a C permit upon arrival provided they chose to take up residency in Switzerland. This permit gives almost the same rights as those given to Swiss citizens, particularly as far as property purchase is concerned.

A G (frontalier) permit is granted to professors chosing to settle in neighboring France. Only European Unions nationals or professors married to a European national may reside in France.

Decision to take up residency in Switzerland or neighbouring France has consequences on the tax system.

C permit holders must complete an annual tax declaration. A calculation spreadsheet for local and federal taxes is available on the Geneva Fiscal Administration website.

For B and G (frontaliers) permit holders, tax is deducted each month directly by the employer from the gross income. The rate varies depending on the civil status and the salary. For a single person without children, the rate is roughly between 20 and 34% (lower if the person is married with children under 18).

Taxes and social insurances consist of approximately 27 to 35% of the gross income.
