FINANCE AND DEVELOPMENT

Opening for one or two assistant professors

The creation of the Centre for Finance and Development in partnership with the Pictet foundation is designed to establish the Graduate Institute at the forefront of research and policy debates on the role of finance in fostering economic development. Current Institute faculty includes macroeconomists interested in financial questions, but their area of research is not focused on developing countries. The faculty also includes development economists, but their areas of expertise do not include finance. One of the expected benefits of the Centre is to allow the Institute to acquire in-house expertise in this area. This is highly timely as the field of finance is in the process of expanding to deal with development issues while a major evolution in the field of development economics in recent year has been the inclusion of financial considerations.

The two positions would ideally go to candidates who combine skills in micro and macro subfields. The candidates must hold a PhD in Economics or Finance with a demonstrated interest in development issues. They may be in the final stages of their dissertation but must complete their doctoral degree by the summer 2012 at the latest.

The successful candidates will contribute to both the Department of Economics and the Centre for Finance and Development. They will be expected to carry out research in finance and development and supervise Master’s and PhD theses. They will teach at both the master’s and doctoral levels. They are also expected to contribute to the Centre through their research and participation in activities such as conferences and public events. Over time, if they so wish, they could also develop an interest in outreach and policy advice.

Applications deadline: 10 January 2012
