Towards New Climate Services Providers

- Servicing the Finance Sector

Workshop, 15.04.2010
09h30 - 12h00, Room 2,
CIG, Villa Barton, The Graduate Institute

The present workshop will provide a deliberative forum and a multi-disciplinary analysis of the relations between climate services providers and climate services users. More specifically, the workshop will question whether climate products and services offered by providers are actually in line with needs expressed by the business sector.
The analysis aims to concretize the results of the World Climate Conference-3 held in Geneva last summer, which decided to establish a Global Framework for Climate Services to strengthen production, availability, delivery and application of science-based climate/weather prediction and services. All economic sectors could benefit from this initiative.

Workshop Format:
Half-day of round-table discussions at the Graduate Institute

Objective:
Bringing together policy-makers, experts as well as stakeholders from the business sector to exchange experiences and discuss needs for climate information.

Invitees:
  • Staff of relevant international organizations, e.g. World Meteorological Organization
  • Swiss negotiators in climate change issues
  • Professors from the Graduate Institute
  • Private companies. Insurers, investors, financial service providers, commodity traders

Key questions for discussion:
  1. What are the information needs of financial service providers, investors, banks or insurances?

  3. How can climate services help businesses in planning long-term investments?
  4. How should companies measure and/or access information on climate change patterns and impacts?

  • Studies on international economic and regulatory issues linked to climate change
  • Other issues based on needs of participants
