Centre for Asian Studies

CAS has structured its activities around the global “Re-Orient-ation” that has characterized international relations in the last two decades. It has identified five main trends as core to the on-going transformation in the field of Asian studies for the coming years:
- The increasing weight of China and India in the global economy and the reinforcement of regional integration;
- The risks of food insecurity and unsustainable use of natural resources;
- The rise of inequality and conflicts;
- The growth of international migrations in/from Asia;
- The needs in education and skills for emerging economies.

CAS has three types of activities, aiming at fostering a better understanding of these issues and concentrating on the four largest emerging Asian countries (China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam):
- Seeking to build on the richness of the disciplinary and interdisciplinary traditions of the Graduate Institute, CAS promotes research on the aforementioned topics related to the global “Re-Orient-ation”;
- CAS provides executive education and training courses on emerging Asia. It also coordinates the contribution of the Graduate Institute to the Master of Asian Studies (MASPEA);
- It organizes a series of public lectures and an annual workshop.

CAS governance consists of an executive committee and a management committee. In addition to the CAS research team, eight research fellows participate to CAS activities.
