Earthquake in Haiti

21.01.2010 - Emmanuel Réjouis, an alumnus of the Graduate institute, lost his life in the earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010.

Emmanuel was of Haitian origin but grew up in France and the United States before coming to Geneva to attend the institute. A true citizen of today's "global village" he was deeply concerned with the state of the world and sought to make a difference as a United Nations Volunteer in Rwanda, Central Africa, Nigeria, South Africa and East Timor.

Emmanuel was optimistic, fun-loving and passionate about sports (particularly tennis) and culture. Those who knew him will always remember his ready smile and warm personality. Emmanuel was a loving husband and proud father of three adorable girls. His last position with the UN was in Burundi. After his family could no longer remain there for security reasons and had to be separated for several months they all moved to Haiti hoping to find a more stable environment where they could raise their children to become familiar with the Haitian culture and French language. For Emmanuel who took up the position of Program Director in the NGO, NonProfitees, (www.nonprofitees.org) this was finally the opportunity to give back to the country he loved so much.

Emmanuel along with two of his young daughters - Kofie-Jade and Zenzie - lost their lives when the Karibe Hotel in Port-au-Prince collapsed. He is survived by his two-year-old daughter Alyahna whom he protected from the falling rubble with his body and by his New Zealander wife Emily Sanson-Rejouis who was working at the MINUSTAH when the disaster struck.
