After graduation
At graduation almost all Graduate Institute Masters students had obtained prior professional or internship experience, with the vast majority of an international nature. A survey among the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Masters graduating classes show that the average time to find a position after graduation was less than 4 months. Nearly half of the students chose to start or further their career in Switzerland while the others went on to work all over the world as shown below. Two thirds of employment opportunities were split among three sectors: non-profit, private and multilateral, with the remaining portion going to the public sector and research and think tanks.
For each of the employment sectors mentioned above, our 2008, 2009 and 2010 Master graduating students have been engaged in a wide variety of organisations as can be seen below. In the multilateral sector a very large number of the students went to work for the United Nations, while those in the non-profit sector were employed by NGOs pursuing many different objectives. A fair share of students going to the private sector chose the banking and consumer goods industries, followed by media and law.
