International GenevaGeneva is home to the European headquarters of the United Nations and hosts about 200 distinct international organisations. Consequently, the city’s population is extremely diverse, uniting cultures, traditions, cuisines and languages from all parts of the world. Approximately 40% of Geneva’s inhabitants are foreigners. Geneva offers a very high quality of life, as the city is clean, safe, small enough for getting around by bike, boasts an extensive public transportation network. It also enjoys an easily accessible international airport and is well connected by train to most other major European cities (for instance, approximate hours of travel are: Milan – 4, Paris – 3.5, Frankfurt – 5). Walk into the train station early on a Sunday morning and you will be surprised by the number of people with back-packs on their shoulders, ready for a long day hike. In the winter, Geneva offers some of the best skiing in the Alps as close as 45 minutes away. Local buses bring skiers to the nearby slopes of Chamonix, Flaine, Les Portes du Soleil, Zermatt, Verbier and other such renowned ski areas. Alternatively, Lake Geneva – the largest lake in Europe – is an inviting environment for water sports. Graduate institute student association (GISA)The Graduate Institute Student Association (GISA) is tasked with being the voice and chief event organizer for the student body at the Graduate Institute. Every student at the Graduate Institute is a member of GISA and is welcome to attend meetings, parties, and discussions, as well as run for a position as either a Class Representative or a member of the six-person Executive Board. Assistant's association (adaeid)Created in November 2008, the Association of Assistants (AdAEID) represents all PhD and Masters students who are working as research or teaching assistants at the Institute. the institute's student associationsStudent Initiatives are essentially clubs or organizations that are created and run by IHEID students.
