Course Outline

This introductory course discusses the potential of negotiation and identifies its fundamental components. It  presents on the Negotiator’s dilemmas, risks and potentials and discusses tools for negotiation preparation. This course also covers major structural and dynamic issues of negotiation processes. It relies on a series of important real-world examples at the international and regional levels (such as the EU-ASEAN, ASEAN connectivity roadmap) to highlight key analytical dimensions in the understanding and conduct of international negotiations. 
 

Who

This course is designed for participants who want to learn the fundamental components of international negotiation.

 

Objectives

  • To get familiar with problems of achieving cooperation through international negotiations;
  • To understand major phases of negotiation processes;
  • To be introduced to key dimensions of the negotiation dynamics;
  • To grasp the importance of identifying one’s strengths and weaknesses, understanding the other party’s position;
  • To be exposed to regional case studies.

Seminar Leader

Prof. Cédric Dupont (IHEID) is Editor of the Swiss Political Science Review and Associate Editor for Europe of the journal Business and Politics. His research focuses on international political economic issues, both at the global and regional levels, on the problem of international cooperation, and international negotiation processes. His current work concentrates on regionalism in Asia, national responses to international economic crises, the management of jurisdictional boundaries between international organizations as well as the factors which influence trade negotiations in the European Union.
