The Institute is managed by the Director, supported by a Deputy-Director, an Academic and a Management Committee.
 

Philippe Burrin is the Director of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies since the 2008 merger of the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) and the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED). From 2004 to 2008, he was Director of the Graduate Institute of International Studies.

Phillipe Burrin was a professor focusing on the history of international relations from 1993 to 2004 and was an invited faculty member at Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität (Gastprofessor für interdisziplinärische Holocaustforschung) in Frankfurt in 2001-2002, at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris (Elie Halévy Chair) in 1999-2000 and at the University of Lausanne in 1993-1994. He was also a Fellow at Oxford’s All Souls College (Hilary Term 2003), at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 2000-2001, at the French Centre for Research in Jerusalem in February 2000 and at Harvard’s Centre for European Studies in 1994-1995.

His works have been translated in many languages and focus mainly on 20th century European history, specifically on the Second World War period. He has received several awards for his works, including the Max-Plank Forschungspreis in 1997.

Elisabeth Prügl was nominated Deputy Director of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in 2010 where she has been Professor of Political Science since 2009.

Her teaching and research focus on gender politics in global governance, feminism in international relations, and the European Union. A United States citizen born in Germany, Elisabeth Prügl obtained her PhD at the American University in Washington DC. Prior to joining the Institute’s faculty, she taught at Florida International University from 1993 to 2009 where she was co-Director of the Miami European Union Centre of Excellence. She was also Associate Director of the university’s Centre for Transnational and Comparative Studies and was Graduate Director of its Department of International Relations.

Professor Prügl’s major works include “The Global Construction of Gender: Home-Based Work in the Political Economy of the 20th Century” and “Transforming Masculine Domination: Agriculture and Rural Development in the European Union”. She is currently working on gender expertise in international organisations and on private sector initiatives towards gender equality.
