At graduation almost all Graduate Institute master students had obtained prior professional or internship experience, with the vast majority of an international nature. A survey among the 2008-2011 Masters graduating classes show that the average time to find a position after graduation was less than six months. More than half of the students chose to start or further their career in Switzerland while the others went on to work all over the world. 92% of employment opportunities were split among three sectors: the public, private and third sectors (NGOs, think-tanks or foundations), with the remaining portion going to the academic sector.
For each of the employment sectors mentioned above, our 2008-2011 Master graduating students have been engaged in a wide variety of institutions as can be seen below. In the public sector, more than half of the recent graduates went to work for an international organisation, while those in the third sector were mainly employed by NGOs pursuing many different objectives. A fair share of graduates going to the private sector chose multinationals, followed by banks and consulting.
