External Students

External students

The Institute is pleased to welcome Master and PhD students registered in a Swiss or foreign university who would like to obtain the corresponding number of credits for a taught course in their programme of study. Following agreement of the relevant faculty member, students who satisfy the conditions listed below, will be able to register as external students and, space permitting, follow their chosen course(s). Upon request at the end of the semester, they will receive a certificate indicating whether they have successfully passed their chosen course(s).

External students are not required to pay the regular fees set by the Institute. Only students from foreign universities that are not members of the Institute’s network of partners will be required to pay a fee of CHF 300 per course followed.

Registration conditions

External students must fulfil the following conditions (no waivers will be granted):

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree;
  • Be registered in a recognised Swiss or foreign university;
  • Notify their institution of origin;
  • Obtain the written agreement of the Institute professor responsible for teaching the course(s);
  • Be present in Geneva to regularly attend the course.

Interested students are strongly advised to contact the relevant professor(s) before the start of courses.

Descriptions of the different courses available at the Institute and biographies of faculty members can be found in the Course Catalogue[pdf].

ECTS Credits

External students can obtain up to a maximum of 12 ECTS credits, equivalent to two taught courses per semester, provided they have completed all the assignments required by the professor and/or successfully passed all the written and/or oral examinations and tests required.

Upon request, a transcript of all the grades achieved will be provided by Student Services. No grades will be communicated by telephone or transmitted directly to the students’ own universities. It is incumbent upon external students to have the credits obtained validated by their own universities.

Procedure

Once students have ensured that they fulfil all the conditions of admission, interested students should:

  • Download a copy of the Registration Form [doc] or request a copy from Student Services;
  • Contact the professor responsible for teaching the chosen course; contact should be established through the Teaching Assistant.
  • Complete the form which is available on the website or at the Student office reception desk, have it signed by the faculty member and return it to the Student office reception desk.
  • If students are from a foreign university, pay the fee of CHF 300 per course using the payment slip that will be sent after registration.
